When I Grow Up I Want to Be...
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”
~George Bernard Shaw
What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be Indiana Jones. When I saw “Raiders of the Lost Ark” at age 11, I decided then and there that I wanted to be an archeologist. I was going to be the female version of Indiana Jones, complete with cool hat and whip. What about you? What did you play at? What adventures where you going to go on? What was your favorite past time? What was your favorite food when you were a child? Did you love to dance or sing or draw?
What of those things could you do today if you wanted to? What can you do to love how you spend your days more? What game can you play, what fun is there to be had or how can you indulge yourself today a bit to feel like a kid again? Do you remember the boxes of Valentine’s cards you would get and take to classmates in grade school? Who will you give Happy Valentine’s wishes to today?
I’m not the female Indiana Jones I envisioned when I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark. I minored in Classical Civilizations because somewhere along the way I was told that I wouldn’t make enough money to support myself as an archeologist. So it was relegated to hobby/interest. It happens to the best of us. What I have learned though is that there are hints about who we are in who we once wanted to be when we grew up. There are sparks of inspiration when we are at play, doing what we love. And there are ways that we can bring those things into our day to day lives so we’re more of who we are meant to be. My love of travel, the adventures I go after, and the puzzles I like to solve are a bit different than what I originally planned…but in my own way, my inner Indiana Jones is still going strong.
Do you remember the monstor.com commercial “When I grow up”? A link to it is below. We all do what we have to do with what comes our way in life but we must never settle for less than we know we are capable of. We all deserve to love our lives and live our days being who we are meant to be. If you are not loving life and how you spend your days – it’s time to go on your own archeological dig, in search of YOU. The really great news is that the clues are there within you. And while there may be some booby traps and angry natives you must dodge along the way, your inner Indiana Jones will prevail if you stick with it.
Happy Valentine’s Day – take a little time today to celebrate you. Have fun today and do something you love! Love all that is uniquely, perfectly, wonderfully - YOU.
